The rock group Strider was the toast of the eighth annual Buffalo Music Awards Tuesday night in Manikins nightclub on Niagara Falls Boulevard taking home first – or second- place plaques in all seven categories in which the quintet or its members were nominated.
Singer Glenda Chausse, guitarist Mike Runo, keyboardist Matt Young and drummer Johnny Magnum all were voted tops in their specialties in the rock division, while bassist Joe Martucci captured a second-place plaque.
In the rock group category, which Strider won in 1987, they came in second to the Trolls. The group also claimed best single for “Rock & Roll Rebel,” its collaboration with WKBW-TV newsman Mike Randall.
Randall, cutting something of a Dan Aykroyd figure in a satin Strider jacket, joined them on stage as they played a brief, high-powered set midway through the ceremonies, singing the single for the benefit of live-eye television news cameras.
Plaques were handed out by tuxedo-clad WGR-FM (97 Rock) radio personalities to winners and runners-up in 31 categories before a crowd that organizers Rick and Marsha Falkowski reported was well over 1,000. Winners were determined from ballots cast by musicians and others involved in the music business here.
Five consistent award winners from previous years were inducted into the Buffalo Music Awards Hall of Fame in recognition of their talents. They were guitarist Bob Andalora, who recently joined Rockcandy; jazz-fusion guitarist and bandleader Dick Bauerle, guitarist Bruce Brucato of the jazz-rock group Gamalon, singer and acoustic guitarist George Doran and techno-rock keyboardist David Kane.
In addition, special achievement awards were given to flamboyant Cleveland-based rocker Paul Pope, long a local favorite, and to J.R. Productions of Tonawanda, which is serving its 20th Anniversary of booking bands around Western New York and throughout the Eastern U.S.
Rockcandy, the band that dominated last year’s awards, took home four more first-place plaques. They were voted top hard rock group and best original group, while Steve Shaw took honors as hard rock guitarist, and Joie Anes headed the rock male vocals category.
Party Squad, one of the ten bands that provided continuous live music in the downstairs lounge and upstairs banquet room at Manikins, collected three first-place awards and one runner-up overall. Singer Mark Dixon, won in the Top 40 male vocals category, while Dave Elder came in first among Top 40 guitarists. The band also took first in the Classic Top 40 category and second in the pop rock category, behind Lady Fire, last year’s Top 40 winner.
Lady Fire, in addition to being best pop rock band, saw singer Jean Deegan claim first place in Top 40 female vocals and bassist Winnie Bergner come in second among Top 40 bassists for the second straight year.
Only Humen, which also performed, took home one first and three seconds. Frank Pusateri won the Top 40 bassist category, while band mates Ray Wood and Rick McEvoy were runners-up in the Top 40 guitarist and Top 40 drummer categories, respectively.
