The Buffalo Music Awards entered their second decade with more prize categories, bigger plaques and a night full of blue-ribbon performances. In all, honors were handed out in 43 divisions. The winners took home the grandest Buffalo Music Awards trophies yet – wooden plaques with front-mounted figurines.
“We needed an extra car to bring them all here,” organizer Rick Falkowski reported. Award announcements alternated with sets by 33 West, Beat City, Gamalon, Nullstadt, Party Squad, the Jamie Moses Band and the Trolls. Most were joined by notables from other bands.
Unlike previous years, when awards and bands shared the same stages, this time all the plaques were presented in Manikins’ second-floor banquet room while the bands played on the main showcase stage. Closed-circuit monitors linked the two floors.
Award recipients gave hometown versions of Hollywood’s Oscar acceptance speeches. Most memorable was Cheshire Cat keyboardist John Masse, who thanked his parents “for spawning me.”
Winners were determined in balloting by other people in the local music scene. First place winners three years in a row are inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame.
This year saw the Hall of Fame welcome its first two female members – singers Donna Palmer of Widow and Barbara St. Clair, whose latest band is the Shadows. Other new Hall-of-Famers included Rockcandy singer Joie Anes, 33 West drummer Mike Cox, Party Squad guitarist Dave Elder and Only Humen bassist Frank Pusateri.
